

The long awaited Companies Act No. 71 of 2008, together with the Companies Act Regulations, came into effect on 1 May 2011 and has changed the corporate landscape introducing new concepts, regulations and rules.
The Consumer Protection Act, No. 68 of 2008, came into effect on 1 April 2011. The Act sets out the minimum requirements to ensure consumer protection. All suppliers of goods and services will be required to review their policies and procedures to determine compliance with the requirements of this Act.

We have been receiving queries from SARS regarding medical expenses claimed as a tax deduction. In the past SARS accepted the amount indicated on Medical Aid certificates (amounts not paid/refunded by the medical aid) as a tax deduction. SARS now requires actual supporting documentation. We therefore advise you to keep all documentation of medical expense payments.
